Welcome to duPlooy Fine Leather.

My name is Derek duPlooy, and I create finely handcrafted leather goods in my small workshop in South Florida. Leathercraft has been my passion since 1980. Over the years, my work has evolved from heavier leather projects to more refined pieces made from lightweight vegetable-tanned leathers and shell cordovan.

Today, I focus primarily on men’s and women’s wallets, card holders, journal and passport covers, purses, totes, belts, and other leather accessories. I have an eye for detail and a passion for creating distinctive, enduring pieces that are as practical as they are beautiful.

Each item is made individually, with careful consideration given to the choice of leather, the balance of the design and the smallest construction details. I work with vegetable-tanned leathers from respected tanneries in the United States, Italy, France, Spain and Japan. Cowhide, goatskin, kangaroo hide, bison hide and exquisite shell cordovans are selected for their character, durability and ability to age gracefully.

I do not use a sewing machine. Every piece is saddle stitched entirely by hand—a traditional method in which each stitch is formed using two needles and a single length of thread. Although considerably slower than machine stitching, saddle stitching creates an exceptionally strong seam and gives each piece the unmistakable character of genuine handwork.

Linings, reinforcements, thread and hardware are carefully selected to complement both the leather and the design. Every exposed edge is meticulously shaped, finished and polished to create a smooth, refined appearance.

Because leather is a natural material, every hide has its own grain, markings and subtle variations. These are not imperfections; they are part of what makes every duPlooy Fine Leather piece unique. With use, the leather will soften, deepen in color and develop a rich patina that reflects the life of its owner.

My goal is simple: to create thoughtfully designed leather goods that feel special from the first day and become even more personal with time. Whether it is a wallet, card holder, journal cover, passport cover, key holder, purse or another leather accessory, every piece is made with patience, precision and pride.
